Discipleship Group Discussion Questions

1. Read Matthew 18:12-14. (One of the most misinterpreted passage of scripture - it's about God, not pastors)
Based on this passage, we learn more about God's character and His love for us - that His love is Unconditional, Individual, and Emotional. How are you encouraged by learning more and more about God's character and who He truly is? What are the results of not knowing who God truly is, even if someone claims to be a Christian?

2. Read Matthew 18:15-17. (One of the most abused passage of scripture)
Various sins such as slander, gossip, and false accusations can be easily avoided by simply obeying what God said in Matthew 18:15-17. Why then is it difficult for many people to obey these clear instructions from Jesus? What are ways we can individually prevent this from happening? What will you do the next time someone unjustly whispers slander about someone else in your ear? How will you represent and glorify God in situations like this?

3. Read Matthew 18:18-20. (One of the most misquoted verses in the Bible - v.20)
Whether we like it or not, God does empower the Church Leadership with the unpopular responsibility of "Binding" and "Loosing." What happens when the church starts to disrespect the leadership and disregard their council, and in some cases, their correction and discipline? What are ways we can prevent this from happening? Why is it that some people will disregard correction and discipline?

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING A MEMBER OF A LOCAL CHURCH

Have you ever heard the following statements before?

"Why should I go to and be a member of a Local Church?"

or,

“It really doesn’t matter whether I go to church. I have Christian friends, my Bible and Bible commentaries, and many church services on T.V. So why do I need a church?”

or,

"What is so wrong about Church Hopping? It gives me a chance to be a member of several churches!"

or,

"Yes, I'm still a member of that church.....even if I haven't been there for the last 4 months."

In my 16 years of pastoral ministry, I’ve heard these statements as well as various versions of these statements. The fact is, there are still many Christians who still don’t get it.

They think that they already have plenty of access to good Bible teaching, fellowship, and worship services through other means that involve occasional, little, or no human contact, with the conclusion that church membership is not required, or that it's just a nonessential option.

So what’s the big deal about the local church?

In the Bible, the Corinthian Church gives us great examples of why we should be a member of a local church and commit to it - no matter what trials may happen.

Well here are 12 reasons why we should go to and be members of a local Church based on the Corinthians letters.

IDENTIFYING SOURCES OF TEMPTATION

In the Christian life we encounter many temptations, but all come from one or more of three sources: the world, the flesh, and the Devil. Each has its own unique way of deceiving us in an attempt to impair our walk with the Lord. But if we can learn to identify and discern the characteristic traits of the things that threaten to ensnare us, then we can ready ourselves with the truth and stand firm against every temptation.

The World:
James 4:4. Competes with God for our loyalty and love.
1 John 2:16. Incites lusts and pride.
Luke 8:14. Chokes us with worries, riches, and pleasures of this life, making us spiritually unfruitful.
2 Timothy 4:10. Sidetracks us from faithful service to God.

The Flesh:
Romans 8:5-7. Infiltrates our minds with its ways and lusts.
Galatians 5:16-17. Sets its desires against the Spirit, urging us to satisfy ourselves.
Galatians 5:19-21. Produces the deeds of the flesh—immorality, idolatry, relational discord, and sinful self-indulgence.
Galatians 6:7-8. Promises pleasure but reaps a ruined life.

The Devil:
2 Corinthians 11:13-15. Masquerades as an angel of light.
John 8:44. Tries to fill our minds with his lies and get us to do what he wants.
Genesis 2:16-17; 3:1-5. Distorts truth by mixing it with deception.
Matthew 4:5-7. Misuses Scripture to delude us.
1 Thessalonians 3:5-8. Tempts us to doubt and give up.
2 Corinthians 2:10-11. Gets a foothold in our lives through sins like unforgiveness and anger. (See also Ephesians 4:26-27.)
1 Peter 5:8-9. Is always on the prowl looking for someone to devour.

Unfortunately, there are Christians who do not grow in their Christian walk and whose lives do not change simply because they don't take personal responsibility for their actions. Instead of taking responsibility, every sin is blamed on something or someone else. For example, "It's not my fault, it's Satan's fault!" "I'm not to blame, it's the world!" "Hey, I was born a sinner, so it's really not my fault!" "It's his fault!" "It's her fault!" "It's their fault!"
(Remember: Who did Adam and Eve blame? Genesis 3:12-13)

Question: Who should we blame whenever we fall into sin?
Read the following Scripture: Romans 7:18-19; James 1:14; 2 Peter 1:4

Answer: Ourselves!

When we begin to truly humble ourselves, stop blaming others and take personal responsibility for our sins and repent of it, only then can we start to grow in the image of Christ.

Discipleship Group Reflections:

1. The World: In what ways has the world taken God’s rightful place in your heart or choked you with its pleasures and distractions? How can you live in this world without letting it corrupt your soul?

2. The Flesh: When you’re facing temptation, do you allow your fleshly desires or the Holy Spirit to have control? Give examples.

3. The Devil: Can you discern any ways Satan has influenced your life? How can you protect yourself against his deceptions and schemes?

TESTING GROWTH IN OUR CHRISTIAN WALK

(The following message was preached on August 20, 2011 at Huntington Beach during CICF's Beach Day)

In various areas of our life, such as work, school, sports, cultural arts, etc., we are expected to show some kind of improvement in a reasonable amount of time. For example, if I were a long distance runner or a tennis player or a musician, I would do my very best to constantly practice and regularly train myself with the goal of improving.

The question is, How about your Christian walk? Is there noticeable improvement and growth since you've received Christ as your Lord and Savior?

When it comes to spiritual maturity, we cannot simply take for granted that we're growing. We are instructed in God's Word to constantly "examine" and "test" ourselves.

2 Corinthians 13:5 says,
Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you — unless, of course, you fail the test?

To evaluate our personal progress, the following seven points are areas we can honestly test ourselves to see if we are truly growing as Christians. Remember, this short list is just a place to start because many more things could be added to the list, but here are seven to consider:

1. You become more aware of God's presence, and who He is.

2. You become increasingly aware of your sinfulness and weaknesses.

3. You respond to sin and conviction with quick repentance.

4. You grow in humility with a teachable spirit.

5. You view trials and temptations as opportunities for growth that God has allowed to happen.

6. You read God's Word with the goal of transforming YOUR heart, and NOT just to finish the task of reading or to puff up your head with knowledge.

7. You have the desire to tell others about Christ and the Christian faith you live.

So how's your Christian walk? Are you growing?

THE LONE CYPRESS

Last July 31, I took my family to see the famous 250 plus years old "Lone Cypress" as it sits on its strong rock foundation looking out into the Pacific Ocean in Monterey, California. When we arrived there we had just missed the last rays of the sun, but were still on time to see the beautiful reds, oranges, and yellows of the setting sun's afterglow.

To me, the tree's symbolism is very profound: a solitary tree on the edge of the huge North American continent, constantly fighting against the wind, the rain, the waves, and the slow and steady erosion of the California coastline which endangers this trees own foundation and existence - one individual against the ravages of the world.

When you stop and think about it, we as people are kind of like that Lone Cypress, constantly fighting against the ravages of this world, namely, its worldliness, temptations, hostilities, and injustices.

As I see it, there are three choices we can make in regards to dealing with the worldliness of this world: First we can take the easy way out and just fall into the convenience of conforming with the world. Secondly, we can live a life of hypocrisy with one foot in the world and the other "supposedly" with the things of God (in the hopes of offsetting our worldliness).

And lastly, we can make the conscious decision to choose God and to live for Him. Not that we will perfectly live a life of obedience because God knows we're not perfect, but to strive to live for Him in faith and obedience to His commands, to recognize our sin and repent of it, to love what He loves, to hate what He hates, and to willingly allow God to change us, correct us, and transform us every day.

Remember, God is not looking at your programs or numbers, or your statistics of success to measure you - that's how the world measures you. What God does look at is your heart to see if you are faithful as you live in the midst of the ravages of this world.

The good news is this: Jesus has overcome the world, and He gives us that same victory through faith in Him.

Jesus said in John 16:33,
"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

As we drove along the scenic "17 mile drive" back to our hotel room that night, I left with a sense of sadness and encouragement. Sadness because the day would eventually come when that Lone Cypress would be no more. Encouraged because that little cypress tree stands as a living testament to the qualities of endurance, perseverance, and the will to survive and not give up in spite of its exposure to hostile elements, qualities that you and I can also have as we put our trust in our God.

Yes, that Lone Cypress has a strong rock as it's foundation which has allowed it to last for over two centuries, but we have a much stronger, unshakable, and solid rock when our foundation is Christ Himself.

Recommendation: Make the time to bring your family to see The Lone Cypress. Although various organizations are doing their very best to preserve this tree, it's still one of those beautiful wonders that may no longer be around in years to come.

REMOVING SELF FROM SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS
Unmasking the Invisible Sin

Self-righteousness is one of the most difficult sins to recognize within ourselves, because it disguises itself as obedience to Scripture and firm convictions about the truth. That’s why Christians are prone to its deceptive lure; after all, we know right from wrong and have a genuine desire to obey the Lord. This “invisible sin” is overcome only through exposure and repentance.

The Pharisees were examples of self-righteousness. By examining their lives, we can understand the inner workings of this manifestation of pride that still traps many believers today. Let’s strip off our blinders, humble our hearts, and allow God’s Word to reveal any false righteousness in us (Heb. 4:12-13).

Characteristics of the self-righteous person:
1. The self-righteous are quick to point out the sins of others but can’t see their own (Luke 6:39-42). (Pharisee Theology: "I thank God we're not like all those other people!" Luke 18:11)
2. Their focus is on good behavior, not on a pure heart. They appear outwardly righteous but are inwardly full of hypocrisy (Matt. 23:25-28).
3. They cannot be corrected (Matthew 12:14 - see context)
4. In the area of Prayer: They pray so people can see them (Matthew 6:5).
5. In the area of God's Word: They miss the point! They don't live it. (Matt. 23).
6. In the area of Worship: They don't! (Matt. 15:7-9)
7. In the area of Faith: Faith is replaced with legalism (Matt. 23:23-24; Phil. 3:6)

Dangers:
1. They reject God’s purpose for their lives by refusing to repent (Matt. 3:1-11).
2. Their hearts are far from the Lord (Matt. 15:1-9).
3. They will be judged by their own standard (Luke 6:38).

Remedy:
1. Ask the Lord to search your heart and reveal any hidden self-righteousness (Ps. 139:23-24).
2. Confess your arrogance (1 Cor. 8:1-3).
3. In repentance, humble yourself (James 4:6-10).
4. Pursue an intimate relationship with Christ, not your own righteousness (Phil. 3:3-11; Acts 4:13).
5. Extend grace, not condemnation, to others (Rom. 8:1).

Questions for Reflection in your Discipleship Groups:
1. Does your knowledge of Scripture or success in obeying God lead you to compare yourself with others who are less knowledgeable or who struggle with certain sins? If so, why do you think you do this?

2. Do you find yourself being defensive and saying things like "Well how about you?!" whenever you are corrected or confronted with sin? Why is this so? What is the difference between correction (as shown by Jesus, the Apostle Paul, etc.) versus condemnation (as shown by the Pharisees).

3. What do you tend to do more: find fault with others, or extend mercy and grace? What does Christ mean when He says that you will be judged by the same measure that you use for others (Luke 6:38)?

4. Are you hesitant to ask the Lord to examine your heart? What do you fear He may find? What are the benefits of bringing hidden areas of your life into the light?

UNINTENDED FOOTPRINTS

A common hazard with photographing on sand is the unintended footprint. It could be a footprint from someone just casually strolling along the beach, or by the photographer himself.

As I scout for possible seascape shots on beaches, I try to rock hop whenever I can, or walk at a safe distance away from the surf. But sometimes I make the mistake of planting a footprint that unfortunately interferes with my composed shot.

The photo below was taken about one hour and 10 minutes before the final picture above as the sun was setting, and it gives an idea of how careless walking on the beach can ruin a foreground shot.

If you look closely at the picture, you will see an unintended footprint immediately in front of the nearest foreground rock on the right. I actually had to wait for more than an hour before the waves could finally reach that one footprint and gradually erase its presence.

Life can be like that. In life we make mistakes - guaranteed. But unlike footprints in the sand that can be easily removed by the waves, our mistakes in life cannot be erased. It's been said that actions are irreversible, and that words are like arrows...once a word leaves the mouth, it can no longer be retrieved.

God knew exactly what He was doing when He required us to forgive and to not hold grudges. He knows how imperfect we are, so He desires forgiveness to be a part of our daily lives.

The Bible says in Colossians 3:13,
Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

Forgiveness may not be able to erase our mistakes, but it does cause healing and restoration, and it frees the soul of hatred and animosity. It also promotes love and unity, but most of all, it pleases and glorifies God.

Going back to the footprints...there is something refreshing and wonderful about the tidal flows on a sandy beach. It's reassuring to know that although my annoying footprints might be there for up to ten or twelve hours, they will eventually melt away in the next high tide, restoring the natural beauty of the surf as if no one has ever walked there before.

In the same way, it's also reassuring to know that because we are imperfect people, we have a God who is always and eternally loving and forgiving.

STURTEVANT FALLS

So the kids are on spring break, and we decided to take a day trip to Sturtevant Falls! It's about a 4 mile hike round trip from the parking lot to the falls and back. I highly recommend it!

But before we hiked, we first stopped at Roscoes in Pasadena to fill up on fried chicken and waffles...Yum! After the hike, we indulged on crab and shrimp at The Boiling Crab in Rowland Heights. So whatever calories we burned during the hike, we got it all back (and some) during our eating adventures. Oh well...

AWESOME WONDER

Those who reject the existence of God claim that the universe and everything in it was created by a gigantic explosion wherein everything just randomly and coincidently fell into place. They call it "The Big Bang Theory".

My question is, how can anyone deny a Creator when they are faced with such awesome wonder? As the Bible says, man is really without excuse!

"For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities - His eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse." Romans 1:20

A TRIBUTE TO MOMMY GEMMA: 1/7/1923 - 3/16/2011

Last March 16, 2011, my wife's mom, Gemma Luis, went home to our Lord. We will miss her dearly, but we know by faith that because of our faith in Christ, we shall see her again one day.

LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS

Long Exposure photography has always fascinated me. It can turn a scene that has been shot hundreds of times before into something special, something that the human eye cannot see, something that hasn't been created by a piece of computer software.

When photographing seascapes with longer exposure times, the final shot shows a smoother ocean because the camera cannot record detail in the water during the longer shutter speed. What is recorded then is just a softening surface mist that is traced through the area where the waves have passed. The longer exposure also records a scene that is brighter than what it really is because more light is able to enter the lens.

The picture below with camera and tripod in the foreground is a quick snapshot I took with my little camera phone about two minutes after I took the main photograph that is pictured above. The smaller picture below gives you an idea of just how dark it really was as well as the rough waves still breaking on the shore.

Because of the five seconds shutter speed that I used, in spite of the darkness, there was still enough light to enter the camera lens during the longer exposure. This resulted in a beautiful evening shot showing a calmer seascape, and the tail end of the sun's afterglow with its soft tones and wonderful pastels. It's amazing how even in the darkness - there is still light.

Have you ever experienced a life battle that seemed dark and hopeless? Well I sure have. But I've learned that no matter how dark the situation may seem, God still shines brightly through any darkness.

The psalmist says of God in Psalm 139:12,
"Even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you."

No matter what dark situation you're going through, God's light is still present and can pierce through the darkest of darkness. With God there is no such thing as a dark and hopeless situation. Put your faith in Christ, put your hope in Him, and His guiding and comforting light will see you through.

After I took the shot, I looked around me and realized that I was completely alone on that beach. There were no traces of human life, just freshly washed sand, the stark rocks, and the darkness. But even then I knew I wasn't alone in the dark because God's assuring presence and His radiant light was shining bright in my heart.

JUST A REFLECTION

Strolling along the beach at Heisler Park, Laguna Beach last Friday, I was blessed to have come across a beautiful warm sunset. As the sun started to kiss the horizon, I couldn't pass up the chance to digitally record what my eyes saw that evening - the reflection of the sun on the shimmering wet sand. The reflection of course is only a reflection, and doesn't even come close to the magnificence, brilliance, and radiance of the sun itself.

As Christians, we believe that Jesus is continually molding and transforming us into His likeness. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 3:18,

"And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit."

Just like the sun's imperfect reflection on the wet sand, even in our imperfect and sinful condition, there are times when we can actually reflect the Lord's glory whenever we exhibit Christ-like behavior, such as humility, and love, and forgiveness.

Every time we make the conscious choice to say no to gossip, and slander, and hatred, and unforgiveness, and immorality, and divisiveness, we in effect "leak-out" a little reflection of our Lord God Jesus Christ...and we make Him smile.

But no matter where we are in our spiritual growth, we must humbly remember that we're just a reflection of the one true God, and it is He who gets ALL the glory, honor, and praise.

CHAOTIC OCEANS

I've noticed through the years that oceans can display their own moods. Sometimes they're calm, sometimes happy, sometimes peaceful, and sometimes even unsettled and out of control.

The above picture that I took in Laguna Beach near Goff Island shows an ocean that seems unsettled, agitated, chaotic, maybe even irritated as it is buffeted by the wind. I felt silly taking this picture on this cold and windy day because not only were my shoes constantly sinking in the wet sand, but I kept picking up my tripod to run away from an incoming wave!

Sometimes life can seem to be chaotic, unsettled, even out of control. But during those times its always good to be reminded that God is always in control.

Our own life can sometimes be out of control because we try to take control, when all we need to do is give God the right to be in control. God is often working on bigger pictures than we can see, and our role is simply to stand still and let Him work.

God said in Psalm 46:10, "Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."

Sometimes we can feel isolated and silly, slowly sinking in the wet sand of our own chaotic lives. But if we will put our faith in Him and be still and wait, God will bring together the right elements and we will receive the blessings He has for us.

"AFTERGLOW"

Last year during the summer months, our church had several beach outings at Huntington Beach, California. It's always a wonderful time to hang-out at the beach to just have fun, barbeque, eat, play, catch up with what's been happening with church members, eat some more, and even time to take a little nap.

Every time I've gone to Huntington Beach I've always seen the pier as a photographic challenge. With the iconic Ruby's Diner at the very end of the pier and the lifeguard tower looming somewhere in the middle, I've always asked myself, "What is the best angle to photograph the pier?" And also, "How can I take a picture of the pier without all the crowds of people interfering with my shot?" Well last February 27, I finally took up this personal challenge of mine.

When I arrived at Huntington Beach, the first thing I noticed were the many people enjoying a day at the beach and strolling along the pier. Great for them, but not for the shot that I envisioned in my head. So I just had to wait, and wait, until the crowds thinned out.

For the meantime, I had to figure out how to compose the shot. Should the pier fill up the frame horizontally? Should it be straight-on from the entrance of the pier? In the span of about three hours, I had walked north and south of the pier trying to gage the best angle.

As the sun was close to setting I knew I had to make my decision, so I positioned my tripod where I finally thought was best in my mind's eye, set up my camera, and waited. But I still had a problem...the crowds of people still walking along the beach and on the pier.

As the sun started to set I started taking my shots, but still not very happy because of all the people walking across the pier. As the sun finally disappeared behind the horizon I still didn't have a shot that I was content with because of the crowd. But I still had one more chance - the Afterglow.

What is an afterglow? Fifteen to thirty minutes after the sun sets, as the rays of the sun now shoot upward from below the horizon and as it passes through the atmosphere, it causes a wonderful "afterglow" with deep colors of various shades of reds and oranges and yellows. On this cloudless early evening, this is now what I was waiting for and hopefully the crowds on the pier would have thinned out by then.

Sure enough about 15 minutes after the sun had set, the first signs of the afterglow emerged. The great thing was that by this time, the crowds on the pier had greatly diminished! This was now my chance, so I took several exposures hoping for the best.

The picture above was taken about 20 minutes after the sun had already set, and with a shutter speed of 1.6 seconds I was able to record the beautiful colors of the afterglow. As you can see in the shot, the crowds on the pier were mostly gone except for a lone individual sitting calmly and undisturbed on a bench beside a light pole on the pier....I can live with that because it actually enhances the serene and peaceful scene that I was looking for.

Assessing the overall picture, it kind of looks like the darkness is in fear of the light, trying to keep its distance from the bright rays of the sun's afterglow. This reminds me of what Jesus said in the Gospel of John:

John 3:19-21
"This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."

We know now that Jesus is that light. He said in John 12:46,
"I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness."

Have you put your faith in the Light of Jesus Christ? The Bible is clear - you are either in the light or in the dark. So where do you stand?

About my composition (if you're interested): I finally decided to stand south of the pier to frame its very end at the center of the shot with the pier jetting out at an angle from the right. Because of the cloudless evening I needed something to replace the boring sky, so the looming lifeguard tower worked out perfectly. I also tried to balance the overall height of the picture with the top of the lifeguard tower with the top of its reflection on the water. Lastly, the heavy dark reds and oranges on the left nicely balances with the pier itself.

RUNNING "TOWARDS" THE STORM

It's been said that Landscape Photographers can easily be identified because while the general public tends to avoid stormy weather by seeking warm and dry shelter, the Landscape Photographer is the one running towards the storm to get the perfect shot. Why? Because stormy weather is usually the best time for dramatic lighting and spectacular cloud formations.

Just yesterday (March 3), the weather report was for stormy skies so I took the chance and drove to Treasure Island in Laguna Beach, California. When I got there I was really disappointed because with a thick cloud cover and a fog that was rolling towards the shore, the sun and horizon could not be seen and everything seemed to have been painted the color gray.

While I was standing there with my hands, ears, and nose freezing, I had to make a choice - leave now and call it a day, or just wait it out and see what happens. I chose the later. As I waited for something to happen, God used this opportunity for me to spend time with Him in His Word and in prayer.

About an hour and a half later something spectacular happened - the sun broke through! It was as if God tore a gigantic hole through the clouds! At first it was just a glimmer of light, but as it slowly emerged through the dark storm clouds the light became warmer and caused everything around me to liven up! It's so amazing to see the power of light as it turned a dull gray landscape into a warm, colorful, and vibrant scene!

So there I was, hands frozen but still trying to manipulate the settings on my camera to get the right exposure. Fortunately I was able to fire off several shots with various exposures before the sun disappeared again behind the dark clouds. The picture above is my favorite shot which shows the dramatic lighting and spectacular cloud formations that I was hoping for. (just click the above picture for a better view)

In all of this, I knew that God was teaching me something. God was reminding me that even times when the clouds are dark and everything seems to be gray, times when I am emotionally, physically, or spiritually weak, it is during those times that God puts me in a prime position to witness firsthand His power working in me. When all seems gray, I just need to patiently wait on God.

As people, our first instinct is to avoid the storms in life, to run away from them. But God has a reason why He allows the storms to come to us. It is during times of weakness that God reminds us that He is with us, and it's an invitation to depend on Him.

God has promised us in 2 Corinthians 12:9, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness."

Dwelling on our situation or others' wrongs against us only leads to resentment and self-pity. But if we seek the Lord and rely on the truth of His Word, we will discover the comfort and strength of His presence. Courage will enter our souls, empowering us to endure hardships and loneliness, and finish the course God has set for us.

GOD'S BEAUTIFUL CREATION

As I take a few weeks off from pastoral ministry to rest and recharge, I've found time to do something that I've always loved - Landscape Photography. Last week I drove to Laguna Beach, armed with a camera, tripod, hand-held light meter, and my Bible, with the goal of getting a nice "sunset shot" using photo techniques that I haven't tried in years.

Arriving three hours before sunset (on that day, sunset was at 5:40pm), I had lots of time to scout the area for my photo shot and spend time to allow God to speak to me through His Word. After I found a possible spot to compose my picture, I sat on one of the many rocks in the area and immersed myself in the first chapter of Philippians.

As God opened my eyes to the wonders of His Word, I totally forgot about the time and realized that sunset was going to happen within the next 15 minutes! So I grabbed my camera gear, set up the tripod at my predetermined spot, quickly calculated my exposure with the light meter, set my camera, and waited for God to show me the beautiful warm colors that only appear with the setting of the sun.

The picture above is my favorite from a series of shots that I made with various exposures because it captures exactly my mood and what my eyes saw that day. Even now as I look at the picture, I can still hear the roar of the waves, feel the cool breeze on my face, and smell the clean ocean air. Just click the picture for a better view.

WHAT IS THE SOURCE OF TRUTH?

What is the source of truth?
Is it man? Is it human tradition and philosophy? Or is it the Word of God - The Bible.

In regards to Man, the Bible says in Psalms 118:8,
"It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man."

Man cannot be trusted for the source of truth because of one simple reason: Man is imperfect, no matter who they are, or what religious title they hold.

The Bible says in Romans 3:23
"for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God"

In regards to Human Tradition and Human Philosophy, the Bible says in Colossians 2:8
"See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ."

Tradition and human philosophy cannot be trusted for the source of truth because of one simple reason: It is made-up by imperfect man.

In regards to God's Word, Jesus said in the Bible, in John 17:17
"Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth."

God's Word is the only source of truth that can be trusted, why? Because it was inspired and written by a perfect God as He guided men by the Holy Spirit to write down exactly what He wanted them to write.

The Bible says in 2 Timothy 3:16,
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness."

and in 2 Peter 1:20-21 it says,
"Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. "

Think about it.
Now that you know, what will your source of truth be from this point on?

LESSONS THE CHURCH CAN LEARN FROM GEESE

Here's an outline of yesterday's sermon. It's really interesting how we as a church can learn so much from the instinctual behavior of one of God's creations - Geese.

As each goose flaps its wings, it creates an "uplift" or a strong current of wind for the birds following from behind. By flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock adds 71% more flying range or traveling distance than if each flew alone.

Lesson:
Churches who share a common vision and direction with a strong and healthy fellowship with one another will accomplish their goals and get where they're going quicker and easier because they are motivated by the excitement, energy, and faith of one another.

Acts 2:42 says, "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship to the breaking of bread and to prayer."

When a lead goose gets tired, it rotates at the back of the formation and another goose flies at the point position.

Lesson:
Churches that are unhealthy and not growing only have 20% or less of the people doing all the work. Healthy Churches share the workload and the majority of members use their God-given gifts to help one another and to accomplish the tasks needed to do.

1 Peter 4:10 says, "Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms."

The geese in formation "honk" from behind to encourage those up front to maintain their speed.

Lesson:
We are on this long journey and our destination as Christians is heaven, and so we must be encouraging to each other to make our journey easier.

Hebrews 3:13 says, "But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness."

Whenever a goose gets sick or is wounded by hunters, 2 or 3 other geese would fall out of the formation and follow the weak or wounded goose to the ground to help and protect it. The geese will stay with that goose until it is either able to fly again, or dies. Then they would fly out again to find another formation to catch up with.

Lesson:
If we had the sense of a goose, then we would stand by each other and help each other if we're down. People need to know that when they need someone, that they have a brother or sister in Christ that would be there for them.

Galatians 6:2 says, "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."

Whenever a goose falls out of the "V" formation for whatever reason, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to fly alone because it is no longer taking advantage of the strong wind current that the wings of all the other geese are creating. If that goose stays away from the flock long enough, it will get tired and decide to land on the ground for a while. On the ground, it may start to feel too comfortable and be tempted to eat a lot which in turn causes the goose to delay joining the flock. Next thing you know, winter comes along and the goose ends up dying because it didn't fly south for the winter.

Lesson:
Christians who just go to church once every month or once every 3 months put themselves into a "spiritual coma" and the things of God like going to church, worshipping God, bible study, or prayer is no longer a priority. The longer they stay away from church, the easier it becomes to not go to church, and when that happens - the easier it becomes to "mingle" with the world.

Hebrews 10:25 says, "Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another - and all the more as you see the Day approaching."

ONLY ONE MEDIATOR

The Bible says in 1 Timothy 2:5
"For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."

According to what God says in His Word, there is only ONE mediator between God and Man - the Man Christ Jesus...not the baby Jesus, but Jesus the Man who died for our sins.

Keep in mind that Jesus is both Man and God. He is humanity and deity in one person.

The Bible says in Colossians 2:9
"For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form."

So if the Bible says there's ONLY ONE MEDIATOR between God and men, then why even pray to someone else, or even believe there's someone besides Jesus who can mediate for you?

Jesus is the one and only mediator between God and men.

Think about it.
Now that you know, it's now time to make your choice. Are you going to accept Jesus, or reject Him?

If you've chosen to accept Him, then just pray this prayer with all sincerity:

"Lord Jesus, forgive me for my sins. I now invite you to come into my life, into my heart to be my Savior and my Lord. Fill me with your Holy Spirit. Open my eyes to Your Words in the Bible that I may correctly understand and apply it in my life. Help me understand more and more each day Your amazing grace and Your unconditional love for me. Thank You for forgiving me for my sins, and for the gift of eternal life. In Your Name I pray, Amen.

KNOCKED DOWN

Romans 8:1
"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

Have you ever been down in life? Knocked down and tossed around? I have, and I'm sure you have as well.

Unfortunately when you're down, there are those who condemn you and continue to kick you to try to keep you down, and they'll do it with intense bitterness, a vengeful spirit, and an unforgiving heart.

But please know this, and knowing this has been my inspiration and my strength... Jesus will never kick you when you're down. Instead, He lovingly says, "Get back up my son/my daughter...and try again."

Bitter people want to see blood...your blood. But Jesus says, "I already shed my blood on the cross." If ever you're down, don't stay down, but look to Jesus. He will be your strength to get back up.

What about those who are still stuck in their bitterness? Well even if they continue to do their worse, just love them, and forgive them...because that's what Jesus wants us to do.

Trust in Jesus. Allow Him to be the one to change our hearts - and theirs.

TRUSTING IN WORKS...OR FAITH

Question: Do you believe that you can go to heaven by your good works? Well if that's what you believe, then how many "works" is enough?

Answer: It will never be enough.

The Bible says in Ephesians 2:8-9,
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast."

Salvation is a free gift from God that we receive by His grace when we put our Faith in Jesus Christ.

If salvation was by works, then people's tendency would be to proudly boast of what they did, instead of what Jesus already did for them.

Think about it.
Now that you know, how will you apply this truth in your life?

The evening before Easter, we had a wonderful Dacio fellowship at our house. My nephew JP Dacio is currectly studying to be a chef, and he prepared a wonderful dinner for all of us! A picture of the main course is above...yummm!

At CICF, we love opportunities for Christian Fellowship, whether it's a Care Group Bible Study, a sports event like softball or bowling, a golf day for the men, women getting together to stroll around the mall, or as we did last March 27 and 28, a surprise birthday party!

On Saturday, we had a surprise party for Bro. Earl, and on Sunday after Wosrhip Service we had another surprise party for Sis. Belen! One of them turned 40, and the other 50. Who turned 40 and 50? Well...I'll leave that up to you to guess.

Last March 20, our Young Adult Ministry organized a night of exciting praise and inspiring worship through two praise bands from Lakeshore Church and CICF. It was awesome! God is awesome!

That night, Pastor Alan Llavore gave a very inspiring and challenging message on Unity. It's so wonderful how God brought people through the church doors from different church ministries to glorify our Lord with one heart and mouth. Praise God! Thanks Pastor Charlie for bringing your loving church members. Great job Young Adults!

TEN SUGGESTIONS FOR A SUCCESSFUL CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE

Here's a little something that I taught during our CICF Valentines Prom Night. It's my hope that it will help strenghten your marriage.

Ten Suggestions for a Successful Christian Marriage

1. Make God the center and number one priority of your marriage, and put your wife or husband as the next most important priority. There must be no interference from your family or friends with this sacred bond of marriage.

2. Never consider divorce or living apart as an option. It is not a solution to your problem. Divorce is not an acceptable alternative because God says it is not.

3. Do not compare your spouse or your marriage to others. There is not another marriage on earth like yours. Let God make your marriage the way He wants it to be.

4. Forgive your spouse. You are to forgive as Christ has forgiven you. Since you are both not perfect, be willing to forgive one another.

5. Stop all criticism. Love does not criticize and find fault. If you are critical of your spouse, you do not have a heart of love. Instead of criticism, try a little praise!

6. Communicate with your spouse. Start listening to what your spouse is saying as well as to what he or she is not saying.

7. Refuse any relationship outside your marriage in which affection is sought or given. Do not seek to make someone else a substitute for what you are not getting in your marriage. You will never solve your problem doing this.

8. Trust your spouse, and also, earn the right to be trusted. A marriage must be based on trust. It cannot survive without it.

9. Do something every day to please your spouse – something that you know will bring your wife or husband joy and happiness.

10. Thank God every day for the 3 best qualities in your spouse. Write them down. Concentrate on them and the positive will soon outshine the negative.

Last January 15, my brother David graduated from his training in Rhode Island as a Naval Officer in the United States Navy Reserves! Congratulations Lieutenant David Dacio!

Although it was very cold there (Saturday morning was 22 degrees), it was great being with David and his family to celebrate his accomplishment. My nieces and nephew had a great time because it was their first time to see snow! I had fun myself because it was my first time in Rhode Island! Thanks Rochelle for driving me around!

Oh, by the way, whenever you're in Rhode Island, you gotta try the lobster! Delicious!

This August, my family and I spent a relaxing and memorable time at the beautiful Teranea Resort in Palos Verdes. As you can see in the pictures above, we're pretty much a golf family! We love it! We also had a fun time strolling around the city, the beach, and playing some tennis.

By the way, I got my first hole-in-one (I have 3 witnesses)! For those who golf - it was on the 6th hole, 145 yards, and I used my 8 iron.

THE POWER OF PRAYER BEHIND ILLUMINATION

On the second floor of the Corona Civic Center Auditorium, a handful of faithful Christians from CICF huddled together in an obscure area with no climate control and faithfully prayed simultaneously while Illumination 2009 was going on.

These faithful members sacrificed watching Illumination 2009 themselves in order to provide active "prayer support" during the event.

Thank you Prayer Team for your committment, your sacrifice, and your faithfulness. I thank God for all of you.

A DAY IN LA

So the kids are off this week (Myles on spring break and Paul off track), all the prep for Illumination tired me out and I needed a little break, and so my wife Cory suggested a whole day excursion to go to our favorite place for some delicious "New Orleans Beignets" at The Grand Lux Cafe! And so yesterday, that's what we did!

Although it was overcast and a little cold, we also made plans to drive to the Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach. What a wonderful place to just stroll around, take your time, enjoy the surroundings, and experience the "California Beach Culture."

It was a very relaxing and enjoyable day spending time with my family.

FIREPROOF (The Movie)

Yesterday, Saturday night, our church had a combined church-wide care group fellowship wherein we all watched the movie Fireproof!

This was really a wonderful movie that was an eye-opener for all of us! There were times we laughed, times we cried (of course some men denied they did...but we heard their sniffling).

It reminded us all about the sanctity of marriage, and how we as husbands and wives must "live together" in Christ's love, and to be patient and unselfish with one another. I highly recommend watching it! I believe you will be blessed.

A GLORIOUS NIGHT!

Last Saturday evening, an estimated 300 people entered the Corona Civic Center Auditorium to attend Illumination 2009! They were treated with music from our own CICF Praise Band, Papuri USA, and the former lead singer of Santana - Leon Patillo!

Why was it a Glorious Night? Because that evening, 21 people between the ages of 16 to 60 responded to the Gospel of Jesus Christ! Glory to God!

I was so inspired by the unity and hard work that each and every member of CICF demonstrated to make this event possible. It's a humble testimony of what God could do through those who persevere and put their trust and faith in Him. I love you all CICF! Thanks for the unity of love and the spirit of fellowship that we all share! Good times and bad times - thanks for not giving up! Thanks for your perseverance! Thanks for your committment to Christ and His Church! I'm so proud of all of you!

I'd also like to thank Papuri USA! You were all great! The blending of your voices was amazing! Special thanks to their soundman Brother Ted! When it comes to problem solving, you're the man to go to!

And of course...Thanks Leon! You are just a bundle of incredible spiritual energy! Your love for the Lord shows through your music and is very inspiring! Thank you so much my friend! Thanks Renee for your hardwork as well!

My thanks to all our Christian friends and pastors from the east and west coast of America, to all the way from the Philippines for your partnership in prayer for this event. You share credit in this harvest as well.

As Illumination 2009 draws closer, our church members and friends from other churches have been working hard to get the word out. If you live in the Inland Empire, maybe you've already seen the Illumination posters and flyers at various business establishments around the area.

One of the ways we're getting the word out is "on the air!" Tune in next week to K-WAVE 107.9 FM and you'll hear an on-air mention on KWAVE's Church Bulletin/Community Calendar portion (Thanks Pastor Alan!).

Although the media of posters and radio are good, don't forget that the best time-tested way is by directly inviting your friends and family by word-of-mouth.

CICF CHURCH BOWL 2009

DART TOURNAMENT AND FAMILY FUN NIGHT

Yesterday at the Church was really a fun day! It started with the Dart Tournament that was sponsored by our Mens Ministry, and followed by a Family Fun Night wherein church members just got together to relax and have fun playing various board games, darts, and even golf putting! For fund raising, the Mens Ministry sold "Gourmet Hotdogs!" Well, they claimed it was Gourmet...but it did taste pretty good!

The winner of our Dart Tournament this year was the team of Joey Lopez and Jimmy Aviles! Congrats!

CORONA CIVIC CENTER AUDITORIUM

Today we had a team of several men from our mens ministry scout the auditorium for logistical purposes (positioning of praise band, welcome table, posting of ushers, inspection of lighting/sound, etc.).

So what exactly is Illumination 2009? It is an event wherein the life-changing and encouraging message of the gospel is presented in an environment that is entertaining, yet nonthreatening.

VALENTINES COUPLES FELLOWSHIP

This years Valentines Celebration was a great follow-up to our Couples Retreat about three and a half months ago! (Click Here for that blog) Everyone had such a fun time! The games were creative, the food was delicious, and the husbands singing to their spouses was entertaining! It was all followed by a time of dancing. This was a great time to strengthen the "spark" in our marriages. I also gave a little devotion based on Ephesians 5:21 to reinforce that spark even more.

During the Couples Retreat last year, we had a restating of our marriage vows. But during this years Valentines fellowship, every couple was given their own little mini wedding cake (thanks Crista) and we all did a fun re-enactment of "The Cutting of the Cake!" Really Nice!

My heartfelt thanks to the Women's and Men's Ministry for a very successful and memorable Valentines Fellowship!

On January 24, several of our Young-Adult Men came to my house for a "Young Mens Fellowship Night." After feasting on pizza and wings, and watching a basketball game on T.V., Pastor Alan and I shared with them what the Bible teaches about how a young man should conduct himself. It was really a blessed time with all the sharing, insights, and questions that the young-adults had.

Our Young-Adult Ministry (The Light) has really grown not only in number, but in their committment to Christ! (Click here for a picture) They are a dynamic and energetic part of our CICF Church family with their own active Friday Night Bible Studies and weekend fellowships.

We all need encouraging at times. I know I do. We've all heard the following verses before, but sometimes it's nice to just hear them again and to reflect and be reminded that He's always there for us.

As active workers of the church, we have all found out by now that ministry can be an incredible blessing, as well as something that can be so difficult and frustrating. I hope these verses will encourage all of you who faithfully serve the Lord as we face a New Year that is filled with new challenges and new hopes as we all together glorify Him.

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION 2008

December is my favorite month...the cold weather, the warm spirit of Christmas in the air, the caroling, family and friends around, and the joy of remembering and celebrating the birth of our Savior.

Last December 21, that December excitement was enhanced with our Annual CICF Christmas Celebration! This year the Young-Adult Ministry (The Light) presented a wonderful Christmas play that was written and directed by our own Alexei Agdigos. Great job Alexei!

As usual, the food was great, and the games and presentations of each Care Group was fun, entertaining, and hilarious!

THANKSGIVING FEEDING PROGRAM

The Saturday before Thanksgiving, members of CICF took the time to help Riverside City Mission in their Annual Thanksgiving Feeding Program for the less fortunate. It was well attended by several of our adults, young-adults, youth, and even some of our children!

I'm really proud of our church members who really demonstrated "Christianity In Action." To God be the Glory!

CICF COUPLE'S RETREAT

At CICF, we believe that a strong marriage will create a strong family, and a strong family will create a strong Church!

Last November 1, many couples of CICF were able to strengthen their marriages, because on that day we had a wonderful Couple's Retreat that was led by Pastor Danny Perez and his wife Grace.

The reteat was held at the beautiful Citrus Historic State Park in Riverside, and was mixed with biblical lessons, practical applications, interactions, great food, and ended in the evening with a solemn time of restating our marriage vows, followed by dancing, fellowship, and lots of fun.

We were all reminded of the biblical role of the husband and the wife, and many other biblical lessons and principles to keep a marriage strong and secure. But most of all, we all learned to have a marriage that would glorify God and not compromise His Word.

Thanks Pastor Danny and Sis. Grace for your love for our church, and the time you invest to be with us.

DISNEY WORLD

For our vacation this August, we went to Orlando Florida. Although the weather was very humid, we had lots of fun! Most of our time was spent at the various parks of Disney World, but we also took a drive to NASA at Cape Canaveral on the east coast of Florida.

On August 23 we had our annual family church camp at a wonderful beach setting located at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside. Although it was cold at night, it was wonderfully warm with clear blue skies during the day...the perfect setting for having fun on the beach! The highlight was the wonderful message from our camp speaker Pastor Danny Perez, as well as the baptism of three church members: Rachel Bacaling, Orly Bisquera and his wife Cora Bisquera. ILLUMINATION RETREAT 2008

There are times in life when we just need to take a break, relax, regroup, be refreshed, and just learn from God and listen to what He has to say. This is not only true for individuals, but it’s true for an entire Church.

Last April 25 through April 27 of 2008, our Church took a nice relaxing break by holding a memorable retreat at the Casa Sirena Hotel at Oxnard, California. The retreat was simply called "Illumination" and it was led by our young-adults and youth, and organized by Nash Quintans.

The beautiful ocean setting, the scenic harbor, the unity and love of all the church members, the wonderful hotel accommodations, and most of all the encouragement of God’s Word (specifically the whole book of 1 John) helped to strengthen and refresh us all, and to help put us all back on track.

Our Lord is so faithful. He gets us through the storms and trials of life, and reminds us that our safe harbor and our rest is always in Him. Having our retreat at an actual calm and safe harbor just reinforced that lesson even more. God Is Good!

EASTER SUNRISE SERVICE 2008

Would you wake up five o'clock in the morning to be at a park before sunrise for an Easter Sunrise Service? Well on March 23, the members of CICF faithfully did and it was well attended!

It was a wonderful day filled with worship as soon as the ambient rays of the sun could be seen, followed by a good-old-fashion picnic and a softball tournament! It was a great way of celebrating our Lord's resurrection and bonding with the members of His Church family.

WE LOVE HAWAII!

For our vacation this year, we took a wonderful Hawaiian Cruise! Hawaii is such a great place to witness the beauty of God's creation, and there was so much to do! We went snorkling, hiking, kayaking, and we even tried these big paddle boat things (don't remember what they're called).

The picture taken above with the four of us all muddy and wet was during our ATV adventure on the island of Kawai. What an adventure!

My most memorable experience was looking out from the balcony of our room on the ship at around 1 am at night during a full moon and calm seas....priceless.

Wow! Ten Years! God Is Good!

On May 6, 2007, our church celebrated it's 10th year anniversary...and what a celebration it was!

We were blessed to have as our special guests Bruce Sumner (SWBC District Executive Minister) and his wife Kim, Curt Gruber (Associate Executive Minister of SWBC) who gave the anniversary message, and a guest performance by former lead singer of the Santana Band (now turned Pastor) Leon Patillo and his wife Renee!

As you will see on the slideshow, we had a "filipiniana" theme wherein the celebration after worship consisted of various Filipino traditional dances, and lots and lots of Filipino food!!!

THE ABOVE PICTURE SHOWS THE ORIGINAL FOUNDING MEMBERS OF CICF TEN YEARS LATER: Ferdinand and Lilian Cancino, and their children J.R. and Archie, Peter and Kynna Lacanienta and their two children, my wife Cory, myself, and our two sons Myles and Paul.

Of course Paul, and Peter and Kynna's two kids were not there back on May 4, 1997 when we started the church, but it's a great picture because it shows all of us 10 years later (still smiling)! I LOVE THEM ALL DEARLY.

The things we experienced together in starting the church are unforgetable....we laughed together, cried together, encouraged each other, worshipped together, studied God's Word together, and prayed together. We're still amazed how the Lord could start a church through a postal worker, a hospital orderly, and a nurse!

We were often asked, "How did you guys know how to start a church ten years ago?" And our honest answer - "We had no idea what we were doing!!!" All we knew was that we had the passion to tell others about Christ, and that I had been given from God a deep burden and a strong sense of responsibility to preach the Gospel to those who never heard it.

So we just faithfully served day-by-day, and week-by-week, completely trusting in our Lord and believing that He would do something wonderful...and that He did! It was a humble privilege for us to witness before our eyes the mighty power of God as He gradually grew the Church.

It's been a long journey, but after 10 wonderful years, the journey has only just begun....please stay tuned for the next 10 years....

CHRISTMAS 2006

Last months Christmas Season was really packed with activity, from the Christmas Caroling to the practices and preparations for the Christmas Worship Service. It was such a joy and a blessing for me to step back once in a while, and to just observe the teamwork and the loving fellowship between all the members who all had the common goal of glorifying God.

Everyone did such a great job. The Children's Ministry had a wonderful (and entertaining) Christmas presentation, the Choir sounded beautiful, and the Christmas Play was professionally presented...and brought a lot of tears to many eyes I might add. But what really made the day complete were the people who responded to the Altar Call and received Christ as their Lord and Savior. Glory to God!

Hi Everyone! I just checked the last time I posted in my blog and I realized that I've been so busy during the months of November and December that I just didn't have time to post anything. Sorry about that.

I did have a lot of "drafts" that were not posted, so I'll try to catch up on those so that you would know what's been happening at CICF.

It's my hope that 2007 will be another great year for CICF as we all together "Produce Transformed Lives and Dedicated Followers of Christ."

Our current study for our "Care Groups" is studying more in depth about "who" our Lord Jesus Christ is. The reason I chose this study for our home bible studies is to increase awareness of our new vision which is to "Produce Transformed Lives and Devoted Followers of Christ." It is my desire that everyone in our church will truly be devoted to our Lord, and learning more about who He is will help us in doing just that.

"THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT"

Many of our church members are being blessed and encouraged through our church “care-groups.” Currently, all the care-groups are studying the “Fruit of the Spirit,” which are nine Christ-Like values that our Lord wants us to display in our lives (Galatians 5:22-23).

In view of this, the following is something that will help reinforce what we’ve been learning about and are simply nine questions based on the Fruit of the Spirit. Think of it as our “Personal Fruit Inspection” that will help us individually be reminded to “Live” these values in our lives. Here they are:

PERSONAL FRUIT INSPECTION CHECKLIST:

1. Was I LOVING today?

2. Was I JOYFUL today?

3. Did I have a sense of PEACE today?

4. Was I PATIENT today?

5. Was I KIND today?

6. Did I show GOODNESS today?

7. Have I been FAITHFUL today?

Last Sunday, the whole CICF Church Family gave a big “sendoff” to a young couple that is very much loved in our church – Orly and Eunice Bisquera. By faith, they have taken up God’s Call for them to move to Chicago to be a part of a core team that will start a new church in the North side of Chicago.

Through the years, Orly and Eunice have been instrumental in organizing the Youth and the Young-Adult Ministries of our church to the dynamic level that it is now. They have been so faithful to the gifts that God has given them and have “given so much of themselves” to the Church. It is for these reasons that it was really hard to let them go.

But we know by faith that God will take care of Orly and Eunice and that many others will be blessed by God through the ministry of this young couple. We all find comfort in God’s Words when He said in Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

The pictures above were taken at our home on Monday morning, September 4 as they visited their pastoral family one more time before they left in their fully loaded car for Chicago.

OUR YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY

Some of my fondest memories of ministry were during my “Young Adult” days as a Christian (late 80's/early 90's). These were exciting times for me as we (the young adults) were always looking for ways to assist Pastor Mark Marcos, and the adult and youth ministries. During those days we met mostly everyday in fellowship and in ministry. Spending time at Denny’s until 2am in the morning just having fun, planning out things and praying for each other was a common thing for us.

Above is a picture of CICF’s Young Adult Ministry (starts at the first year of college). I thank the Lord for their servant attitude, their desire to help in the spiritual growth of our church youth, their initiative to meet together in the study of God’s Word, and their commitment to our church.

Hmm…I wonder if they’ll let me hang out with them at Denny’s!

CICF SUMMER CAMP 2006

Last August 18-20 our Church had it's 10th Annual Family Church Camp at Del Mar Beach which is located at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside. Our many thanks to Ate Cora for sponsoring us to be able to gain access to the beach.

Although I was on Sabbatical, my wife and I made a surprise visit on the Saturday of that weekend to fellowship with our church family. It was a fun time of fellowship, eating, playing in the beach, and games. The highlight of course was the baptism of five members followed by a Worship Service on the beach.

Pastor Alan who is our Associate Pastor, with the help of our Elders did a wonderful job officiating the baptisms of the following members: India Deal, Cionelle Bisquera, Daniel Custodio, Steven Anderson, and Gay Bautista. Pictured above is Pastor Alan (on the left), one of our Elders Bro. Ted Gonzales (on the right), and India Deal after just being baptised.

...and as usual, the Women's Ministry did an excellent job with the food, and the Men's Ministry also did an excellent job with the "muscle-work", tent-making, and many other duties to make our church camp safe and successful.

SABBATICAL BLESSINGS

As I approach the end of my Sabbatical I find myself very excited to get back into ministry, to see all the church members again, and to share with the congregation the Vision that the Lord has shown to me during my Sabbatical.

These 3 months away from ministry was an enormous blessing as it allowed me to really focus on the Lord to discern His Will for our Church, something I really couldn’t do while I was deeply engaged in active (and busy) pastoral ministry.

In my 9 years as a pastor, I’ve never taken a Sabbatical vacation before, but now I realize the incredible benefits that come from it which allowed me to filter out the busy pastoral duties in my life, which in turn allowed me to better hear God’s voice and “recharge my batteries.”

On Sunday, September 3, I will be returning to the pulpit to share about my Sabbatical experience, but more importantly, to make clear to the Church our new vision and the direction that God wants us to take. It is my hope that I’ll see you there this coming Sunday, as we all “Produce Transformed Lives and Devoted Followers for Christ.”

REGENERATION 2006 NATIONAL CONVENTION

Pastor Alan sent me a great preview of what happened at this year's Regeneration Conference in Chicago. I'm really proud of our 40 representatives from our church who learned a lot spiritually, and also learned a lot through their uplifting and challenging "life experiences" in Chicago as well. Eunice reported to me that we were the largest Church delegation there. Praise the Lord!

SABBATICAL VACATION

Hi Everyone! As many of you already know, I started my 3 month Sabbatical Vacation on June 1. I thank the Lord for the 3 month Sabbatical that He gave me through my Church Elders, as well as for Pastor Alan for “Filling the Pulpit” for me while I’m gone. Also of course for my guest speakers Pastor Danny and Pastor John.

Wow, my first Sunday away from Church was actually more difficult than I expected! Since last week, I had this weird kind of feeling that I needed to prepare a sermon for Sunday – but wait, I’m on vacation!

I also had the temptation to call a church member, any church member to ask how the Church Worship Service went, but my wife Cory wisely said to me, “No, no, no! You’re on Sabbatical!”

After nine years of pastoring our church, and week after week of hours in preparing a relevant biblical message every Sunday to feed the flock, as well as numerous other “pastoral duties,” I guess its really not that easy to just say, “Okay, I’ll see you again in 3 months!”

In my past vacations, I never really took longer than 2 weeks at a time for my vacations, one being in April and the other being in August, and in that two week time I knew that I had to at least try to “meditate” on my future sermons, because 2 weeks isn’t really that long. But this time it’s different.

During my 3 months, I plan to rest, spend time with my family, do things that I’ve always had to put off, and really pray and discern for vision as to how God wants me to take the church to the next level. Please pray with me and for me as I try to accomplish those things.

Please also pray for me that I’ll be okay as I fill in some extra hours as a “per diem” operating room RN (its what I used to do before God called me to plant a church). I know, I know, that’s not rest, but it does help us out financially - and I can “rest” in that.

Please forgive me if I have to turn down officiating or even showing up to a birthday party, baby dedication, baptisms, home dedication, anniversary, etc., during my absence. Because for me to say “yes” to one person but “no” to another would be a “double standard,” and there’s no integrity in that. During those times, Pastor Alan and our Church Elders are more than qualified to step in for me to represent our church during your special day.

SWBC ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Every year the Southwest Baptist Conference (SWBC) holds their Annual Gathering in the City of Anaheim, California, wherein many Pastors, Church Planters, Missionaries, and Church Leaders get together to hear great speakers, to fellowship, encourage one another, and to just see whats been going on among our sister churches.

This year I took Pastor Alan along with me to attend the conference which was held from May 18 to 19. It was a really "spiritually uplifting" and encouraging conference, and we got to hear two inspiring speakers - Leith Anderson and George Barna.

We also attended a session that taught us how to answer question about the book/movie "The Da Vinci Code". It was taught by Mark Strauss who is a New Testament Scholar and teaches at Bethel University. He's a very smart man! I was really impressed!

The picture above shows George Barna talking about "Thinking Like Jesus." He has been called "The most quoted person in Christian Churches today." I myself have quoted him in my sermons many times.

Next year its my hope that many more of our CICF Church leaders would attend as well!

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

Our Church celebrated Mother's Day last Sunday, and we honored them with a special powerpoint presentation from the Youth Ministry, a special sermon dedicated to Moms, roses for all the Moms, and a special Mother's Day celebration after our worship service. There was great food and games for all the Moms - as well as for the men!

Thanks Men's Ministry for all the planning that you put into it.
Thank You Lord for our Moms.

CICF WOMENS OUTING

Our Women's Ministry at CICF have always been an active and dynamic ministry that God has been powerfully working through for His glory. I am so thankful for their committment to our church.

Last Saturday, May 13, the women of our church had their all-day women's outing at Torrey Pines in San Diego. It was very well attended! It was a time for fellowship, spiritual growth, eating, hiking, meditation, and lots of fun!

Last Sunday, our Church celebrated its 9th Year Anniversary! Our original start date was May 4, 1997. We started with only 6 adults and 3 children - and God has now graciously grown our Church to more than 160 members! Glory to God!

God is truly faithful when He promised us in His Word that He "will build His Church and the gates of Hades will not overcome it." I emphasized in my sermon that whenever we celebrate a Church Anniversary, we are not celebrating the work of man, but we are celebrating the work of God.

During our Anniversary Worship Service, 2 adults and 1 youth made first time commitments to receive Jesus into their hearts as their Lord and Savior! Yeah God!!! After our worship service, there was food, fellowship, and lots of fun!

Praise the Lord for nine wonderful years!

CULTIVATE ENDURANCE

In our Care Groups last Friday/Saturday, we all studied chapter 3 in our "Integrity" Bible Study Series. This particular chapter was about "Cultivating Endurance" and we all learned through the life of Job some very deep lessons about endurance and faith.

One truth that we all got out of this study was that God Is Good - not because we've received blessings from Him (material; health; etc.), but God Is Good because of "Who" He is. So whatever happens in our life, good or bad, God still deserves to be worshipped and praised because - God Is Good!

As the Senior Pastor, I really don't have an assigned Care Group, so every week I would rotate to one of the Care Groups. Last Saturday I attended the East Riverside/Moreno Valley/Perris Care Group and it was held at Manong Orly and Manang Cora's beautiful new house in the City of Perris. The study was skillfully led by Bro. Orly Jr.

SURPRISE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I've attended many surprise birthday parties, but last Saturday was a first for me. In one day, in the same house, we celebrated TWO surprise birthday parties!

The first one was for Mommy Lily Anderson, a woman who's probably one of the best cooks, and who is also a model wife, mother, and Christian. The second surprise party was for Sis. Rachel Quintans who is one of our very active church leaders and is someone that you can trust and depend on.

We thank the Lord for another year for Mommy Lily and Sis. Rachel.

RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD

Last Friday, our church youth group known as "FORTRESS" had their monthly "all youth night" for Worship/Bible Study/Prayer/Fellowship. The theme this month was our "Relationship with God."

No, they're not playing poker in those pictures. It was an "ice-breaker" game where in each of the three groups had to make a house made of cards. It was a simple lesson to show that without a healthy relationship with God, our lives will just fall apart - just like a house made of cards.

We all know about Michael Jordan. But most probably - he doesn't know us. And based on that - A question that I asked all the youth that night is a question that I'd like to ask you, and that is: Do you know about God? or, Do you personally know Him?

2006 CICF MEN'S MINISTRY RETREAT

Last Saturday and Sunday, the men of CICF had their "Men's Ministry Retreat" at Victorville. It was a great time of refreshing, eating, singing, bonding, and most importantly - Spiritual Growth.

Our guest speaker, Pastor Danny, gave us an incredible and memorable lesson about "Priorities" that was based on the first chapter of the book of Haggai. All of us returned to Corona determined and committed to be the men that God has called us to be.

My personal thanks to all the men who took time-out from their busy schedules to help out and attend this event. Praise the Lord!
